For Better For Worse…

Edith walked out of the doctors office carrying an envelope, an envelope that was going to change her life, forever! She had given up many a times…she picked up her phone to call Ben when she went to the parking lot. “Honey, are you still coming for lunch?” It was a done deal. Ben was wondering why Edith wanted to see him urgently. He would still come home in the evening anyway. Edith had insisted, everything would have to wait, everything! When Edith arrived home, she went straight to the bedroom to change her clothes and went to the kitchen to prepare lunch for Ben and herself.

It was an hour later when she felt Ben’s hands clasped around her waist to announce his arrival…baby im home! “What is the occassion?” he asked. Edith had made his favorite traditional vegetables, meat and ugali. He helped her to set the table and within no time they were having their meal. Edith was quiet all along.  Ben was worried for her. “Baby, you have not uttered a word since I came, are you okey? ” She assured him all was well.  Edith let tears fall freely as she reminiscenced. They had been married for six years, and no baby to show for it. Ben had been so supportive. He had shielded her from relatives who kept asking what was wrong. He had even been advised to get another wife. Ben a successful businessman did not give up on his college sweetheart. They had done several tests, visited different hospitals and was open to new ideas. They had opted for IVF which was unsuccesful. Edith had given up. Ben kept telling her to be patient and wait on God’s time. The only option left was surrogacy. A month ago they had made a decision to give surrogacy a chance. Several tests later, the family Doctor had told them to wait for a surrogate mom to make their dream a reality.

That morning,Dr. Oprong had called to inform them that he had found a surrogate and expected to see them later in his office to run more tests. Ben had an important meeting thus did not make it to the hospital. Edith walked to the receptionist to confirm her appointment. She would meet the lady who had decided to give her the opportunity to be a mother on the next appointment. Before then she had a lengthy talk with her gynaecologist who explained every process and procedure she would undergo.  The fibroids had made conception next to impossible and even after a succesful operation, nothing had happened. After several tests were done, she waited on the lobby and read some magazines to distract her mind. Dr. Oprong ushered her into his office later to discuss the results. “Edith”, he whispered….”the contents therein will determine the next course of action, talk to Ben first and get back to me.”he said.

Eddie talk to me, Ben adjured her. Edith was lost in thought, she explained every nitty -gritty to Ben as to thats day meeting with the Doctor. She finally heaved and stood up to fetch the white envelope that was addressed to her. Ben was mesmerised, he wondered what was wrong this time. He took the envelope which was still sealed from her and hesitated to open it to divulge its contents. He took a deep breath and finally stood up and went beside Edith, held her tight and assured her that she would always remain the love of his life and no report would deter him from loving her. He took a napkin and  wiped the tears that had already welled up out of her eyes and assured her of his unending love for her. When she finally calmed down, they proceeded to open the envelope.

Everything came to a standstill, the silence was deafening, Edith grabbed a seat, Ben knelt down before her and cupped her face in his hands and kissed her. It was his turn to cry, he held her so tight…the scan results showed they were expecting a baby! She was a month gone, they were expecting twins! The couple cried tears of joy, they hugged each other tightly and thanked God for the miracle. Ben cancelled that days appointment and stayed indoors with Edith. It was an afternoon to call to mind…..
